The WSU men more or less cruised through the first three rounds of the NIT with wins over Santa Clara, SMU, and BYU -- and now they're off to New York City for the semifinals, where they'll face Texas A&M at Madison Square Garden. The women, meanwhile, bowed out in their NCAA tournament opener as their offense failed them against Kansas State.Music by Randy England. The WSU women's basketball team is off to its second consecutive NCAA tournament, while the men's team makes its return to the postseason -- for the first time in a decade -- with an appearance in the NIT. These last couple of weeks have been real rough for the men's basketball team at WSU, but a lot of it will be forgotten if the next week goes real well. The Cougs take on the Washington Huskies twice (and Oregon State once), and if they can take it to their rivals, that will go a long way with fans. The big story of the week, however, was the women, who picked up a huge win over another bubble team and then picked up an even bigger win with an upset over the No. 8 Arizona Wildcats. They probably secured their ticket to the Big Dance -- it'll be the first back-to-back appearancesMusic by Randy England. The WSU Cougars have now lost three straight in men's basketball, including a baffling result against the Arizona State Sun Devils over the weekend. That was sandwiched in between losses to Arizona and Oregon. What went wrong? And can the Cougs get back in the win column? The road doesn't get any easier with a trip to UCLA and USC on deck. The women, however, won a couple of close ones!Music by Randy England. The WSU men's basketball team continues to roll, having won five in a row leading into a massive matchup with Arizona on Thursday night. It's a huge chance for the Cougs to prove they belong in the NCAA tournament. The women, meanwhile also have a big weekend, taking on Oregon, UCLA, and USC, all at home.Music by Randy England. Jake Dickert and his staff have hit the recruiting trail for high schoolers, and the Cougs landed a quartet of players who visited last weekend, including a quarterback. John Mateer isn't very highly thought of by the recruiting services, but he sure seems tailor made for the Air Raid. The Cougars suffered a mind-blowing loss to Stanford, of which we try to make sense. But they rebounded against Cal, and that makes us happy. The Cougars lost Apple Cup-winning quarterback Jayden de Laura, but they have replaced him with one of the most highly touted transfers on the market: Cameron Ward. It's entirely possible that WSU has actually upgraded at quarterback. Plus: Klay Thompson's big return for the Golden State Warriors, men's basketball's split at the mountain schools, and women's basketball's bummer of a loss to Arizona. Here's that Cougfan article we referenced on the CougsFirst!
